What does the colors of the nautical star mean

One answer to the colours of the nautical star and what they mean is:

Sailor's in the past have used the colours to represent starboard and port side.

Port side is left.

Starboard is right.

If the star was green this would mean that it was the starboard side and on to the right.

If the star was a red colour then it was the port side and to the left.

These are representing the returning home from a mission out at sea.

They used to use the nautical star for guidance.

This is only one answer and should be taken literatial as this has not been varified as the real reason. But this could give you clues as to possible what the reaon might be.
